Bang The Drums!

Yes you should 'cos The Moffatts are back with a new image and a corking new sound. "This is the direction we wanted. This is the real Moffatts, Dave Moffatt tells Marguerita Tan

They may be a pop boyband but The Moffatts have always come across more like a teenage rock band. And now, with their impressive new album, Submodalities - which means "visual change in image", and chock-ful of tunes inspired by the likes of Nirvana, silverchair and Oasis - Scott Moffatt, 17, and his one-year-younger siblings Clint, Bob and Dave, may well be on their way to become a credible altie pop/rock group!
If you think their last single 'Misery' is the bees' knees, wait you hear their head-banging new tracks such as 'California', 'Call The Doctor', and of course, the first single 'Bang Bang Boom'!
MAX gets on the blower to Germany and urges Dave Moffatt (who looks like Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl these days!) to tell us all about their brand new sound!

Fact! The Moffatts now reside in Minot, North Dakota, with a vacation house, in Calgary, Canada!

Hi dave! Let's cut to the chase. The new album is definitely more rock than pop. Why the change?
Well, that's the direction we wanted to go into. The last album was more for the record company. They wanted more pop commercial hits, so that's why the last album was so poppy. The new album is for us and the fans, and we definitely think that the fans are going to enjoy the new album which has a 'live' feel to it. This is really The Moffatts!

But if truth be said, many Moffatts fans are more into bubblegum pop. Don't you think that the band's "rockier" image may alienate these fans?
I don't think so, I think our fans wil grow with us. I guess there are people who really like pop, but I don't think they will be disappointed by the album because there still are pop songs. But the way they're produced, they have an edge to it.

Fact! Little Miss Moffatt and Hey Jude live with their Grandpa and Grandma Moffatt in Calgary!

Which is your fave song on the album?
A song called, 'I Don't Want You To Want Me'. It's a rock song and it's a lot of fun to play 'live'. I also like 'Antifreeze And Aeroplanes'. It's an amazing song. We wrote it as if we're friends or relatives of a person who is drug addict.

Fact! Dave's ideal girl must be "confident, enjoys life, a good listener but also a good talker"!

Do you know somebody like that?
We did know somebody who had a friend who drank too much alcohol and eventually died. We didn't write the song based on that experience, but, I mean, it does go for anything, drugs or alcohol.

The song 'California' is the bomb. How did you guys get the inspiration for it?
We actually wrote the song when we were in Hawaii and it is the hardest song we've ever written! It took forever to write because we had a hard time getting the melody and the lyrics down. But it came across and it's definitely a strong song on the album! I think it's a fun summer song that a lot of people are going to love to dance to and have a party with. It's alot like The Beach Boys and the music has got a really good beat.

You guys really swing at your 'live' shows. What's the feeling you get when you go up on stage?
You feel like there's a lot of energy in you. When you feel the crowd, you can't wait to show them what you have. And throughout the whole show when they're screaming and singing along to all the songs, it just makes us more energetic!

Lastly, if you could have three wishes for Submodalities, what will it be?
Well, we hope that it'll earn us crebility as a band, and that we get the direction that we wanted with our new sound. Lastly, we hope that the fans will appreciate and live the new album!

Submodalities is in the stores.

Castaway Dave!

Life of a Moffatt is almost "all work no play". Hence, we decide to transport Dave to a mystical island getaway - and see if he could create a paradise for himself!

If you are stranded on an island, what facilities would you hope to find? A music store, a book store and a keyboard.

Which brother would you bring along? Oh, that's hard. I really couldn't - they all have their special things. So I couldn't say which one I would like to be stranded on an island with!

How about a girlfriend? No, I don't have a girlfriend yet.

If you could bring a pet, what would it be? I'd bring my dog.

Is that the same dog you talked about last time? Yeah, but now we have two dogs - Little Miss Moffatt and Hey Jude. They're both Shih tzu.

Whose CDs would help you pass the lazy days by? Oh, there's so many! Aerosmith's Get A Grip and Nine Lives and Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill.

Favourite books? Misery by Stephen King, Hannibal by Thomas Harris, and Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens.

What kind of food and drinks will you feast on? I basically eat anything that's edible except cucumber! (laughs)

What kind of clothes will you wear? White shirts and pants.

The best game to play? Bowling. I love bowling.

And the best band to provide entertainment? Aerosmith!

Finally, what would your paradise island dream house be like? I would like to have a tree house like the one in Swiss Family Robinson!
