Lime Magazine, November 2000

Small Change!

Everything changes! Including Canadian canaries, THE MOFFATTS! Shedding their boy-next-door image and pop sensibilities for catwalk-cool aviator shades, sexy sideburns and a new rock-infused CD, Submodalities, it apperas these teen terrors have been doing plenty of growing up sincewe last met! CHELSIA TOON rings band member Dave to find out what else about the band that has changed!

LIME: Yoh, Dave! The new album's titled Submodalities. Any idea what that means?
DAVE MOFFATT: (Proudly) Yes! It means anything to do with a visual change in image. We just thought, 'Wow, that's exactly what we're doing. It's perfect for the album!'

Can you form a sentence with the word?
Let's see... I've actually never used it before! Well... how about: Being able to submodality... erm... is... to change! Gee, I'm not exactly sure!

Cripes! Your brother Clint came up with the album title after reading the book Using Your Brain for a Change. Did he pick up any other smart tips?
(Seriously) It's a business book. We read books that'll help us in the business. You always have to be aware of what's happening. I'm sure Clint picked up some tips from there but he didn't share any with me!

What other self-help books do you guys pore over? Anything the likes of How to be a Serious Rock Star or The Guide to Sprouting Sideburns?
(Guffaws) No! Whatever we do, we do it because we want to. I've just finished reading The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens and it was a lot of fun!

May artists like 98 Degrees and the Spice Girls have gone for a different sound in their music. The Moffatts have also gone from pop to rock with your latest offering. Is there any type of music you'll never do?
We don't put limits on our music. We started out doing country music then we went into hard grunge - almost heavy metal! And we tried pop. We always try to work out a Moffatts sound. I won't rule out the possibility of trying out other forms of music.

The Moffatts have gone for a complete image overhaul to suit your new grown-up rocky image! What has been the biggest fashion change of all?
We always wear what we're comfortable in. We'll definitely have a rock image five years down the road! I mean, I didn't expect to have short hair and sideburns! How are the sideburns going? They're growing good! Heh heh. We're happy with the way we look now - I think this image is the right direction to go!

Sideburns aside, what else has changed since we last met?
We've all grown taller! I'm the tallest at the moment! And I'm proud of that! I used to be the smallest but now I might even be the heaviest! We try to keep fit on the road by hitting the hotel gym.

How has life on the road affected the Moffatts?
Not much 'cos we've been travelling all our lives basically! We are never homesick 'cos the road is our home! There's never really one place we stay for more than a month!

What would you like to change about Planet Pop?
I'll definitely like to see more real music! What's real music? The Moffatts! We play our own instruments, write our own songs and we really do sing! There's no point being in the music business if you're being told what to do. I'll like to see more bands performing, too.

Big bro Scott says you guys often ask girls out during your tour. Does your standard pickup line go something like, "Wanna star in the next Moffatts music video"?
(Laughs) Definitely not! I don't like bringing up the fact that I'm in a band. It doesn't make me feel very proud of myself. It's not like I'm too old to get women, you know? The main objective in a relationship is to be yourself.

How has your taste in girls change over the years?
It's changed a little but I still like women who're attractive. With attractive personalities, too! That's the most important. I want someone who's confident and has a great attitude towards life!

What's the best tune to serenade a girl on a first date?
I don't know. You can't ask me that question!

Er... why not?
I'm not gonna serenade a girl on a first date! When you want to have a normal evening with someone, you don't wanna bring in the music! You just wanna have a normal evening and have a normal conversation with a normal person!

Well, what will we catch you warbling in the shower than?
I don't usually sing in the shower. I only do voice warm-ups before live shows.

Right. Which one of you always changes his mind last minute?
Probably me. But I'm getting better at making up my mind. I'm learning to stick to what I want. (Defensively) Not that I'm fickle! I don't change my mind about big things. It's usually just little things...

How much loose change do you have on you right now?
You mean money? That's a personal question! I'm not saying I don't want to talk about it. It's pretty obvious we've had success. It's not like we're struggling...

Erm... what we meant was, how much spare change, ya know, like coins and stuff, do you have in your pockets?
(Stumped)Yeah, you mean money right? I don't know! I'm not gonna say!

D'oh. How often do you change your underwear?
(Good-naturedly) Every day! Definitely!

We remember you as the comic of the band. Are you still as humorous?
(Chortles) I think we all our moments. Heh heh. I definitely have a sense of homour but we've all matured, so I'm not exactly sure. You'll just have to see when we meet you again, won't you?

The Moffatts' new album Submodalities is in stores.
