Lime Magazine, September 2000

Back With A Bang!

Bring out the fireworks! THE MOFFATTS are back with explosive new single 'Bang Bang Boom'! And (jeepers!) scruffy whiskery chins! What's happened to our fave Canadian bros? A concerned STELLA THNG gives band elder Scott a ring and is shellshocked to hear him snarl: "I wanna smash a guitar on stage!" Help!

LIME: Hi, Scott! Where are you calling from?
SCOTT MOFFATT: We're in Cologne, Germany, promoting our new single 'Bang Bang Boom' right now! We'll be releasing our new album Submodalities pretty soon. We shot the album cover photo near a volcano in Hawaii, but no, we're not wearing straw skirts! Hoho!

How are Bob, Clint and Dave? We hear the Moffatts have a swanky new image!
We don't look like 20-year-olds but just like our music, we've grown up! [Scott is 17 and his triplet bros are 16.] We still like our jeans and tees - we're not wearing suits - but our new look is very rock 'n' roll!

The last time we saw you, you didn't even start shaving yet! And now you're spouting goatees and beardy side-burns! How long did it take you to grow all that hair?
(Proudly) Oh, we've been shaving for a while now! The goatee took us some time because it wasn't growing quite the way it should, but it's okay now. I trim it every day. Sometimes, I forget to shave and it gets a bit scruffy but that's okay, makes me look sexy. Haha!

Do the girls like you better with it?
(Unbashedly) Well, I usually get compliments, they say I look older and cooler!

We hear you look a lot like erm... Brad Pitt now.
(Shamelessly) Yeah, people have been saying that a lot, dunno why. I'm flattered but I just want to look like Scott Moffatt! Rock 'n' roll, man!

Your snappy rock choon 'Bang Bang Boom' has hit No 1 in Canada! Congrats!
It's rolling up the charts in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland right now. On our last album, it took quite a while before or singles got on the charts. This time, it's been amazing. 'Bang Bang Boom' even debuted at No 1 in Malaysia!

You're huge in your hometown but how is the fame situation in the US? We hear things have been so quiet, fans are sending a petition to your record label on your behalf! Cripes!
(Guardedly) We won't be releasing 'Bang Bang Boom' in the US till early next year but our record label is great! They have a lot of great bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Radiohead... Breaking into the US is really difficult. It's all about luck and having that one big song. Our last single 'Misery' was considered a great track by a lot of people but I think 'Bang Bang Boom' is the one that can blow us up. This is the perfect time for us to break into America. We weren't ready last year but people are starting to look at us as serious musicians now instead of just another boyband!

Is it true the Moffatts want to be a (ahem!) Serious Rock Band? Are you gonna start smashing guitars and screaming a lot on stage now?
We don't scream but I've always wanted to smash a guitar just like The Who and The Clash [v rowdy '70s rock bands!] I've never done it before but I'm waiting for my chance.

Your new album Submodalities is produced by the legendary Bob Rock (who's worked with rockers Metallica, Motley Crue and Aerosmith). Was it nerve-wrecking working with him?
We were kinda relaxed but excited to meet him. We've heard a lot of great things about Bob and were blown away by his work! The Moffatts wrote 10 out of 12 songs and he made it into an album we're very proud of. (Emphatically) We didn't want a boyband record. We wanted a classic rock album that people would remember. We still have alot of fun music like 'California' an uptempo track on the album that talks about a night in California, and another pop tune called 'Typical' but yeah, we've definitely evolved into a rock band.

Like the Moffatts, Hanson have shifted from pop to rock recently. Is this the new direction for the music scene, you think?
I think '70s rock is coming back in a big way, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon! bands like Limp Bizkit, which are really huge now, are just a fad. They're overplayed on the radio! (Intensely) Rock 'n' roll is the way to go!

What is the No 1 rule a rock band should observe?
(Very grandly) A real rock 'n' roll band is a people's band. It's always about playing for the people and giving to the fans who buy our records.

Do you have any tough-rocker piercings or tattoos?
I've never been into piercings. I would like a tattoo someday but it has to symbolise something. I will never get a tattoo of my girlfriend's name, that the stoopidiest thing anyone can do! I mean, how long is the relationship gonna last? The best tattoo to get is the name of your first kid.

Which rock chick would you like to go to the Grammys with: Mel C, Gwen Stefani or Courtney Love?
I'd go with Gwen Stefani, I've met her once at a party. She's a brilliant entertainer, a great singer and a really nice person. (Worriedly) I don't think I want to go with Courtney Love. I've heard a lot of nasty thing about her.

You're either on the road or in the studios. Must be quite difficult meeting girls...
(Rakishly) We meet girls wherever we go, they're kinda hard to get away from! If we see a girl on tour we're attracted to, we'd ask her out. My last date was a week a go, in the US. A date for us would be hanging out with a girl, talking to her and ... (Trails off saucily) I won't go into great details but you know what I mean. Hur hur!

Listen out for The Moffatts' new single 'Bang Bang Boom'. Their new album Submodalities will be be in stores soon.
